Tropical rainforests, manicured golf courses, beautiful people.
Caribbean: Leeward Islands

Any Leeward Islands itinerary must include St. Barths. This exclusive French island with its picturesque port of Gustavia, lined with designer boutiques and upscale eateries, is a magnet for yachtsmen who appreciate its sophisticated combination of relaxing seaside vistas and chic inner sanctums.

But, it’s worth adding a few more nautical miles to your itinerary to experience St. Kitts and Nevis. These two neighboring isles offer the kind of lush tropical setting usually associated with the South Pacific. At the center of St. Kitts stands the spectacular volcano Mount Liamuiga (pronounced Lee-a-mweega), a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. The ground on Nevis also rises to the clouds and is abundant with lush forests, Vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers.

Basseterre and Charlestown, the two capitals, are among the most inviting of the Caribbean’s colonial harbor towns. By law, the buildings can’t be taller than the palm trees—on both St. Kitts and Nevis, nature preservation is a major value. If you love swimming, snorkeling or windsurfing amid pristine waters, these islands are bound to please. Divers also will enjoy exploring underwater shipwrecks and the islands’ abundant sea life. As a bonus infrequently found in the Caribbean, the golfers on board will find 18-hole courses on both islands.

Day 1 | St. Maarten Your charter starts in Sint Maarten’s Simpson Bay, right at the end of the airport’s runway. Take advantage of the island’s split nationality by enjoying the abundant duty-free shopping in the Dutch port of Phillipsburg, followed by haute cuisine on Saint Martin’s French side.
Day 2 | St. Barths | 21 nm The designer boutiques are the best here—as are the food, the wine and the pretty people on this chic, hedonistic isle, a favorite of socialites and celebrities around the world. Enjoy windsurfing in the crystal-clear waters or see and be seen on the beach at the Eden Rock Hotel.
Day 3 | St. Kitts | 42.5 nm Outdoor sports reign supreme on St. Kitts. Hike through the rainforest with its exotic flora and fauna up to Mount Liamuiga’s mile-wide crater or go horseback riding along the beach. Scuba divers will find both wrecks and reefs here.
Day 4 | St. Kitts Head ashore for a day of golf at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club with its 18-hole championship course, redesigned and renovated in 2004. Non-golfers can relax with a soothing treatment at the Emerald Mist Spa at the adjoining St. Kitts Marriott Resort, which also features a casino.
Day 5 | Nevis | 5 nm Just a few short miles away, Nevis is removed from the hustle and bustle. Here, you can enjoy excellent windsurfing, fishing and kayaking, or spend the day on secluded Lovers’ Beach. Golf also can be found here at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis, reputed to be one of the Caribbean’s finest courses.
Day 6 | St. Eustasius (Statia) 46 nm You’ll love diving in the protected waters off tiny Statia, known for its wrecks and its lush coral reefs. Guided hikes to the Quill, an extinct volcano, also are popular.
Day 7 | St. Maarten | 33 nm This time, enjoy one of the many water-related sports offered here, including sailing and snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and waterskiing, or spend a few last hours of relaxation on one of the island’s 37 beaches.
